2015 WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY – Upcoming Events

Nigeria once again joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Sickle Cell Day on June 19th 2015. In commemorating the day this year, the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN) has selected the theme “SICKLE CELL DISORDER: LIFE-SAVING MEASURES” – drawing attention to Sickle Cell Disorders (SCD) and to life-saving services available to affected persons. Most of these services are offered by the foundation at the National Sickle Cell Centre.

The following activities have been lined up by the Foundation, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government:

A Media Workshop for journalists on THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA IN CREATING AWARENESS ON LIFE SAVING SERVICES FOR SICKLE CELL DISORDER IN NIGERIA. –  Event Page

Schools Quiz on UNDERSTANDING SICKLE CELL DISORDER – Event Page

A Schools’ Quiz on UNDERSTANDING SICKLE CELL DISORDER for Senior Secondary Students. The aim is to ensure that school age youth are adequately informed about sickle cell disorder and thereby become change agents at the community level. They will also be empowered with knowledge about sickle cell long before they start their families. Twelve public schools drawn from all the Education Districts in Lagos State will participate in the quiz competition.

RURAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH, WITH FREE GENOTYPE AND BLOOD GROUP TESTING in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State to create awareness and knowledge of SCD at the grassroots. – Event Page

The community outreach will comprise:

  1. A talk on “Sickle Cell and the Importance of Knowing Your Genotype”
  2. Free Genotype and Blood Group testing for 500 people (focus is on young people)
  3. Free consultation (including genetic counseling), prescription and provision of drugs to those who have complaints, symptoms or signs of illness

AFRICA FASHION WEEK NIGERIA 2015 (AFWN 2015) – Event Page

AFWN has chosen Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria as its charity for 2015 and will promote awareness about sickle cell disorder and SCFN at its event coming up at the Eko Hotel Lagos on 23rd & 24th May 2015.

After successfully hosting the annual Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL), the organisers decided to bring the African inspired Fashion event to Nigeria in 2014 and this year is the 2nd year of the fashion week in Nigeria.

Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN 2015) will showcase over 50 emerging, upcoming and young designers to a global audience of industry experts, press and media houses and the general public. The designers will present their new collections to a global audience at the Eko Hotel and suites, Victoria Island Lagos on 23rd & 24th of May 2015.

Lending their names and showcasing alongside the designers will be veteran designers with over 20 years in the fashion industry, Adebayo Jones, Ade Bakare, Zizi Cardow and Tina Lobondi.
