Couples for whom there is a real possibility of bearing children with Sickle Cell Anaemia,
will be able to find out the haemoglobin genotypes of their unborn child within 3 months of
pregnancy, so that timely and adequate information, support and counseling can be given to them.
Research is central to progress in all aspects of SCD. Extensive molecular, pathological, clinical,
qualitative and statistical research on SCD is being carried out to facilitate the achievement of SCFN's
strategic objectives.
Genetic Counseling
The first step towards cost effective sickle cell management, is the implementation of community
based services in the area of genetic counseling which are implemented by genetic counselors.
SCD Treatment Skill Upgrade
Certified course technically delivered to health care personnel with the view of providing them with
latest skills required to care for people living with SCD.
Laboratory Training Workshops
Practical workshops aimed at building capacity in Laboratory Technologist and other relevant laboratory
operators to enable them make accurate diagnosis of sickle cell and related disorders; including recommending
the needs of laboratories in different states of the federation.
Clinics and Support Groups
The foundation replicates in other local government areas and states the significant reduction in ill health
and death rates obtained in a Lagos clinic and support group. This is achieved with the application of a holistic
treatment.
Monitoring, Audit and Evaluation
This is an integral part of SCFNs programs. An important aspect of the foundation is the World Health
Organization (WHO) collaboration aimed at assessing the efficiency & effectiveness, outreach and impact
of SCFN projects.
