The Stanbic IBTC Library membership is open to researchers, postgraduate students, health professionals as well as members of the public over the age of 21, seeking general information on the sickle cell disorder.

A registration fee of N2,500 per annum will be charged for use of the library’s materials, computers and internet access.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

Annual Membership
To apply, print out an application form, fill it in and bring it to the library in person along with

Applies to postgraduate students only

  • A letter of introduction from the student’s university department

Applies to all including postgraduate students

  • 2 passport size photographs
  • An identity card which may be any of the following
    • Driver’s licence
    • International passport
    • National identity card
    • Students’ identity card
    • Organisation’s identity card

If all the criteria are met, registration can be completed on the spot.

Short term use
A day pass may be issued for short term use at a fee of N500 per day.

LENDING POLICY

Only members of staff are entitled to borrow library resources. All other users may access library resources for onsite use only. Photocopies can be made at a fee and in compliance with copyright law.

  • The OPAC provides seamless access to information on the Web, in databases and on the library shelves. It is easy to use and results obtained show what is available online and on the shelves. There is an advanced search facility for experienced users to narrow down searches and get more specific results.
  • The Print Collection consists of theses, guidelines, standards, reports, and the individual experiences of people living with the sickle cell disorder. The focus of the collection is on genetic screening and counselling; diagnosis and medical management, policy, national initiatives and legislative actions. The collection which is limited at the moment is expected to grow over the next 12 months.
  • Online resources and databases. Most of the library’s collection is available online through websites specifically on sickle cell and other health information databases which the library subscribes to through the HINARI Access to research in health programme.
  • Reference Service. The library provides a reference service to members who require a more in-depth search for information sources on the Web or within the print collection.
  • Information Alerts. Members will receive information alerts by email on the latest books acquired and journal articles on the sickle cell disorder.

OPENING HOURS

The Stanbic IBTC library, which is situated on the 2nd Floor of the National Sickle Cell Centre, is open week days from 0900 to 1600 hours. The library is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Donating books and other items
The library welcomes gifts of books and non-book material from members of the public on all related aspects of the sickle cell disorder e.g. psychology, counselling, genetic screening etc.

Gifts of books and other resources received will be evaluated for their content and currency as well as their physical condition before they are added to the library collection. Books in poor condition may not be accepted. However, books found to be in good condition but have unsuitable content will not be returned to the donor. Such books may be offered to other libraries.

All gifts received shall be acknowledged in writing.
