Train 1,000 healthcare workers across six states in evidence-based sickle cell crisis management in alignment with current management guidelines in the year 2026
A critical gap in the management of Sickle Cell Disorder in Nigeria is that many frontline medical professionals lack specialised clinical training in modern SCD care. To bridge this gap, the Medical Workers Capacity Development Programme focuses on strengthening local healthcare infrastructure. Operating from July 2026 to December 2026, this initiative is structured to train 1,000 healthcare workers across six states: Kano, Adamawa, Plateau, Oyo, Enugu, and Rivers.
The comprehensive training curriculum provides doctors, medical students, community health practitioners, and genetic counsellors with evidence-based protocols for SCD management, clinical crisis management, diagnostic interpretation, and genetic counselling techniques. Equipping local health workers with these specialised skills drastically improves patient survival outcomes, ensures faster pain relief during crises, and standardises healthcare delivery across rural and urban centres. Elevating clinical capacity across Nigeria is essential to building long-term institutional resilience against the disease burden. The total implementation cost for this specialised medical education is ₦16.67M per state.
