Stroke Prevention Programme
Uses Transcranial Doppler technology to screen 10,000 children and detect early stroke risks.

Children between the ages of 2 and 18 living with Sickle Cell Disorder face an exceptionally high risk of suffering sudden, devastating strokes. To combat this critical neurological threat, the foundation drives its Stroke Prevention Programme using Transcranial Doppler (TCD) technology. This specialised ultrasound enables clinicians to non invasively monitor blood flow to the brain, allowing for the early detection of stroke risk before permanent neurological damage occurs. The foundation recommends that every child undergo two TCD scans annually to ensure effective preventive monitoring.
For 2026, the programme has set an ambitious target of screening 10,000 children and young adults. Achieving this goal requires a significant expansion of screening capacity. To meet the growing demand, the foundation urgently requires five (5) additional TCD machines, each costing ₦53,200,000 ($38,000), bringing the total equipment requirement to ₦266,000,000 ($190,000).
Securing these machines is critical to expanding access to life saving stroke screening and preventing childhood paralysis, cognitive impairment, and other devastating neurological complications across high burden communities. A contribution of ₦53,200,000 ($38,000) will fund the purchase of one TCD machine, while a total investment of ₦266,000,000 ($190,000) will fully equip the programme with all five machines needed to achieve its 2026 screening target.
