Every year on June 19, the foundation coordinates a massive series of national activities to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day, drawing global attention to the disease. For 2026, the official host location is Kano State, which carries Nigeria's highest overall burden of Sickle Cell Disorder. This high-impact public advocacy campaign consists of a diverse range of targeted activities structured to educate communities and build clinical capacity.
The planned agenda includes training 300 medical workers, hosting an educational seminar for 300 Muslim and Christian clerics to drive community advocacy, and executing a large-scale free medical outreach for 3,000 persons living with SCD. It also features the prominent Red Umbrella Awareness Walk involving 10,000 participants, a national blood donation drive, and an intensive media advocacy campaign. These public events are crucial for dismantling social stigma and driving early genotype screening. The total execution budget required for this comprehensive statewide campaign is ₦90,000,000 ($65,000).
