Mrs. Ayo Otaigbe is a distinguished healthcare leader and a pillar of the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN), where she currently serves as the Head of the Department for Genetic Counseling. With a career defined by clinical excellence and an unwavering commitment to patient advocacy, Mrs. Otaigbe brings a wealth of experience to the Foundation’s mission of alleviating the burden of sickle cell disorder in Nigeria and across the African continent.
Before her transition to the non-profit sector, Mrs. Otaigbe enjoyed a decorated career in public health service. She served as the Director of Nursing at the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Lagos, where her leadership was instrumental in elevating nursing standards and administrative efficiency. This rigorous clinical background laid the foundation for her specialized work in genetic counseling, a field where she is now recognized as a leading authority.
At SCFN, Mrs. Otaigbe has evolved into a “Trainer of Trainers” par excellence. As the Lead Genetic Counseling Trainer, she spearheads the education of healthcare professionals from across Africa, equipping them with the sensitive communication skills and clinical knowledge necessary to guide families through the complexities of genotype management. Her training modules emphasize not only the science of genetics but also the psychological support essential for those living with the disorder.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Otaigbe is a tireless advocate for preventive care. She is a prominent voice in national awareness campaigns, frequently educating the public on the importance of genotype compatibility and the use of Transcranial Doppler (TCD) scans to prevent strokes in children. Through her leadership at Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, she continues to shape policies that prioritize patient dignity, specialized care, and the global standardization of genetic counseling.
