What Leg Ulcers are?

Leg ulcers are painful, open sores that typically develop on the lower legs as a result of poor circulation, prolonged pressure, or delayed wound healing. For individuals living with sickle cell disorder (SCD), the risk is significantly higher. Sickled red blood cells can block small blood vessels, impairing blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues. Over time, this reduced circulation can lead to chronic, slow-healing wounds that cause severe pain, infection, social isolation, and reduced quality of life.

Over Three Decades of Dedicated Leg Ulcer Care

For more than 31 years, the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (SCFN) has remained at the forefront of addressing this complication through its dedicated Leg Ulcer Unit. As part of our commitment to holistic sickle cell care, the unit has provided free leg ulcer treatment to thousands of patients, conducting over 71,808 wound dressing sessions to date. This long-standing service reflects both our expertise and our unwavering dedication to improving patient outcomes.
