Mobilises 12,000 NYSC corps members to drive grassroots sickle cell awareness and screening.
The Youth Development Programme (YDP) is a highly structured initiative designed to rapidly scale up nationwide awareness of Sickle Cell Disorder by leveraging the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) platform. Scheduled to run from July 2026 to December 2026, the second cohort aims to impact 12,000 young persons across six states: Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross-River, and Akwa-Ibom.
During their stay at NYSC Orientation Camps, selected corps members undergo intensive training on sickle cell education, genotype awareness, community health advocacy, and grassroots mobilization. Following orientation, these trained youth deploy to their respective Places of Primary Assignment across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas. They serve their host communities by spearheading local awareness campaigns, organising public genotype screening exercises, supporting primary healthcare facilities, and educating rural populations on SCD prevention.
This multiplier model allows the foundation to efficiently spread preventative education to remote, underserved populations. The operational cost to run this extensive community deployment is ₦8,000,000 ($5,700) per Monthly Clinic/State.
